Water early when you can
Morning watering gives the soil time to absorb moisture before the hottest part of the day. It also means leaves are less likely to stay wet overnight, which can matter for some plants.
Go deep and slow
A quick splash on the surface can evaporate before it reaches the roots. Use a gentle flow, pause when the surface starts to shed water, and return after a few minutes if the ground is very dry.
Protect the soil
Mulch, shade cloth, grouping containers, and a sheltered position can all reduce the amount of water lost to heat and wind. The weather score raises the need for watering when hot, bright, dry air and wind arrive together.
